It is the friction between the glass in the match and the glass in the safety paper that causes it to light at the head and subsequently burn at the base of the wood. It is the sulphur (which is what you smell) that is combined with oxidising chemicals like as potassium chlorate, colourants (dyes), fillers, glue (binders), starch, and powdered glass to form the match heads. Active ingredients such as phosphorus or phosphorus sesquisulfide are included, as well as gelatin, which serves as a binder. The “head” of a match refers to the end of the match that is used for lighting. The match is covered with a substance that will ignite when it comes into contact with anything. The most often seen material is a little piece of wood or stiffened paper. One to act as a basis for the match head, and another to function as a finished layer of match head. Once the striking end of the stick has been dipped in hot paraffin wax, a little quantity of fuel will be provided to the wood, allowing it to burn more readily. Wood is chopped into little pieces and soaked in ammonium phosphate, which acts as a fire retardant, before being allowed to dry. What is the process of making a matchstick? The match head has been coated with paraffin wax to ensure that the flame penetrates the stick. White phosphorus spontaneously combusts, disintegrating potassium chlorate and releasing oxygen as a result of the reaction. Damage is not counted as having been sustained.Īs soon as you strike a safety match, the friction between the two pieces of glass creates heat, which converts a little quantity of red phosphorus into white phosphorus vapour. ![]() TM: Something that is path-based is probably easier for users to deal with. Are there any similar technologies found in the other BSDs that you feel would be better suited for porting to OpenBSD? OJ: It doesn't sound like the SELinux architecture would be a good match for the simplicity desired by OpenBSD developers and users. The fine-grained access controls on resources and inter-process interactions are quite cool, but they also contribute to the large size and complexity of the resulting security policy. The SELinux technology is interesting as well, though it still suffers from some usability issues. Darwin has an interesting kernel the Mach and BSD bits are fairly separate (though they are becoming more tightly coupled with each release). TM: I learned a fair deal on that project. OJ: You were involved in porting the SELinux framework to Darwin. The real reason I haven't been to a hackathon in a few years is that people were making fun of my musical tastes -) ![]() TM: Most of what I listen to falls under the rubric of "indiepop". OJ: Is there a particular genre or musical artist that you prefer to listen to while programming? OJ: What interests do you have outside of OpenBSD? I used to tell people that the correct way is "Sue Doo" but I've stopped correcting people -) TM: Believe it or not there was a discussion about the "right" way to say "sudo" in the sudo wikipedia page. OJ: Do you still run across users that pronounce it "Sue Doh"? My sudo source tree goes back to 1993 and I made the first release in 1994. At a certain point I felt it would be useful to share these changes with others and so I became the de facto sudo maintainer. After the folks who wrote the CU version of sudo left the University, I helped maintain it internally. As we got new machines running different variants of Unix we would port sudo to the new platform. The version we used was written by two sysadmins at CU. TM: I started doing system administration as a student at the University of Colorado where sudo was in wide use. Can you tell us a little bit about how you got involved with this mainstay of the sysadmin's toolkit? OJ: Somewhere along the way you became the official maintainer of sudo. While I initially used it to play games, I did some programming too and taught myself C using it when I was in high school. I got my first computer, an Atari 800, when I was 10 or so. TM: I've always been the type who likes to take things apart. OJ: What got you interested in computer science in general, and C programming specifically? TM: I have a bachelor's in CS from the University of Colorado, Boulder. On the other end of things, with the improving support for embedded CPUs I think it is only a matter of time before one of the Taiwanese vendors ships an OpenBSD-based embedded product to avoid GPL issues. TM: As multi-core CPUs become the norm I think we'll see improvements in OpenBSD SMP support as well as the rthreads support being finished. OJ: How do you see OpenBSD's goals changing over the next few years? At one point I was pretty much the go-to guy for the OpenBSD userland, though as my free time has diminished in recent years other developers have taken over that role. Later on I took part in multiple sweeps of the tree for buffer overflows. From there I moved on to replace uses of sprintf() in the tree with snprintf(). TM: I started out by updating some of the packages included in the base OS (such as lex, rdist and awk) with more recent versions and fixing up man pages. OJ: What was your original role or contribution, and how has it evolved since then? At the time, the fact that it had a packet filter as part of the base OS (it was ipf at the time) was a big selling point for me. He told me to give OpenBSD a try, so I did. I had submitted some s/key-related patches to NetBSD which were being ignored, but which Theo had applied to the OpenBSD tree. Todd Miller: I received commit access in July of 1996. OpenBSD Journal: How long have you been with the OpenBSD project? Miller a member of the project since the early years. Often we focus on the technical aspects of recent commits and new subsystems this series aims to uncover the personal side of the people that make OpenBSD tick. My son got the filet and scallops combo and loved his meal as well. I confess that I’m a steak sauce person but I am so happy that I didn’t cover up the flavor of the steak by adding sauce. Repetitive reading of texts featuring certain sight words is one strategy for helping children commit these words to memory. If your child is in school, you will most likely get a set of these flashcards from. What’s important to remember is to teach multiple strategies and provide all the tools to read and write. One strategy for teaching sight words that has been the focus of a number of studies is to pair vocabulary words with corresponding pictures to help children form an association between the written word and its meaning (Elliott & Zhang, 1998). Using flashcards is a very simple yet effective way to teach sight words. Teaching automaticity with sight words isn’t bad. Demonstrate instructional strategies to teach sight. Since Sight Word 60 gives you more than that we’re providing the necessary practice so that the words can be orthographically mapped into students’ memory. Understand the connection between phonology and orthography when storing words for automatic retrieval. Students need to decode a word 1-8 times according to research. This is so important because the research tells us that decoding is the most efficient way to build automaticity. YES! Decoding sight words is possible and should be used along with automaticity. Plus students also get practice decoding the words so they’re getting multiple tools and strategies for being good readers. A few high-impact, engaging minutes to teach sight words. The premise of Sight Word 60 is that in the course of a school week, 5 days, students get more than 60 exposures to each sight word and that happens in just a few minutes each day. And thus was born Sight Word 60 and yes, Sight Word 60 IS aligned to the science of reading. I knew I was failing my students and wanted to fix it. The kids were just along for the ride! My students always did ok and learned some words but they didn’t retain the words well and I just knew there was a better way. We did all kinds of random things and we never had a direction and plan for teaching sight words. So, you see, what had happened was, I stunk at teaching sight words. |
